Tesla Officially Launches In Malaysia

US electric vehicle (EV), manufacturer Tesla has officially launched in Malaysia, offering the Model Y as its first model for sale with the promise of more models coming to the Malaysian market soon.

In a statement, Tesla said all trims of Model Y (Model Y Rear-wheel drive, Long Range, and Performance) will be showcased at the company’s Kuala Lumpur showroom and also announced that their headquarters for the Malaysian market will be located in the Cyberjaya science park.

Starting at RM199,000, (US$44,000), Model Y will begin delivery to Malaysia customers in early 2024. In line with Malaysia’s goal to promote low-carbon mobility and support the EV industry, buyers in Malaysia will also enjoy full import and excise duties exemption for newly registered zero-emission Tesla EVs.

Additionally, customers in Malaysia can benefit from 100% road tax exemption and individual income tax relief of up to RM2,500 on expenses related to EV charging facilities for the assessment year of 2023. Companies that rent non-commercial EVs may claim tax deductions on the rental amount up to RM300,000 from the year of assessment 2023 until 2025.

The Malaysian government has been making a strong case for the iconic US EV maker to look at the Southeast Asian nation as its preferred investment destination for Tesla’s next manufacturing plant.

Citing its established car manufacturing capability and industry knowledge, Malaysia claims it would be the ideal Southeast Asian hub for Tesla to produce its models for sale in the region.
